# A credit freeze can limit some new accounts opened in your name.

Where a credit freeze is available, it limits access to a credit file used for some new-account
applications. The process, cost, duration, and alternatives depend on where you live.

This page helps you:

- Understand what a credit freeze does and does not do

- Know what to check before you place one

> A credit freeze covers one kind of misuse: new credit opened in your name. Existing accounts,
> cards, and passwords still need their own care.

A credit freeze generally concerns access to a credit file for a _new_ application. It does not
close an existing card or loan, and it does not address every kind of identity misuse. Exact effects
depend on the local credit-reporting system and the organization checking the file.

The terms _fraud alert_, _credit lock_, and _credit freeze_ can describe different products or legal
processes. Availability, fees, duration, and who must honor them vary. Use the official
credit-reporting guidance for your country before choosing one.

## The same word can describe very different protections.

Not every place offers a measure called a credit freeze. Choose where the credit file is held to see
the clearest official starting point. It may be a freeze, a credit ban, protective registration, or
a route for reviewing and correcting the file.

**Where the credit file is held**

### United States

**In the US, contact each nationwide credit bureau.**

The FTC says a freeze is free, stays in place until you lift it, and is placed separately with
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It describes a fraud alert as working differently: you contact
one bureau, which tells the other two.

Start with: Contact all three through their official channels.

### United Kingdom

**In the UK, Protective Registration prompts extra identity checks.**

Cifas lists Protective Registration at £30 for two years. Cifas says it asks member organizations to
make extra identity checks when your details are used for an application, which can make a genuine
application take longer. It is not a credit freeze, and Cifas says it does not cover every
application or an existing card transaction, and does not affect your credit score.

Start with: Read the Cifas coverage and eligibility details before registering.

### Canada

**In Canada, a security freeze depends on your province.**

Freezes in Canada are set province by province. The Ontario government says residents can place a
security freeze free of charge with Equifax and TransUnion, and that freezing the file with one
agency does not freeze it with the other. If your credit file is in Quebec, the Autorité des marchés
financiers says you can place a free security freeze with Equifax or TransUnion that remains until
you ask the agency to remove it, and notes that employers, collection or placement agencies,
governments, landlords, and insurers may still receive the report with your permission. Elsewhere in
Canada, the federal consumer agency says a security freeze may be available in some provinces or
territories, while fraud alerts are a separate option.

Start with: Check both bureau files and confirm what applies in your province or territory.

### Australia

**In Australia, ask about a credit ban.**

The Australian Information Commissioner says a credit ban first lasts 21 days, that one of the three
reporting bodies can pass the request to the other two, and that you can ask for an extension when
the concern continues. Confirm the current evidence and extension rules before the first period
ends.

Start with: Confirm the current process with each reporting body.

### India

**In India, start with your report and correction options.**

The Reserve Bank of India requires each credit information company to provide one free full credit
report per calendar year to people whose credit history it holds, with a route to correct errors.
This guidance describes report access and correction, not a general credit-freeze service. Check the
relevant credit information company's current options if you are concerned about misuse.

Start with: Review the relevant reports and use the official correction route for errors.

### European Union

**Across the EU, a freeze may not be one national service.**

Credit reporting and identity-misuse remedies are organized by country. Some places may use a
different measure, while others may not offer a single freeze across every credit file. The relevant
national financial or consumer authority is the first place to look. If the issue concerns incorrect
personal data, the European Data Protection Board directory can help you find the national
data-protection authority.

Start with: Find the national authority that covers the record and ask which remedy applies.

### Brazil

**In Brazil, a central bank control covers certain new accounts.**

Banco Central do Brasil offers the free BC PROTEGE+ service. It can prevent certain checking,
savings, and prepaid-payment accounts from being opened in your name while it is active. It is not a
general credit freeze, and it does not cover every financial product.

Start with: Check what BC PROTEGE+ covers before activating it.

### Japan

**In Japan, credit disclosure is split across three centers.**

Japan's Financial Services Agency points consumers to CIC, JICC, and the Japanese Bankers
Association's Personal Credit Information Center for disclosure. One center's file may not show
every borrowing relationship. The FSA page does not present a single cross-agency credit freeze, so
ask the relevant centers what current measures are available if you suspect identity misuse.

Start with: Check which center or centers hold the records you need to review.

### Other / not listed

**The available protection depends on where your record is held.**

Credit files and preventive options differ by country. Find the official credit-reporting or
financial-regulator guidance where you live, then ask which alerts, freezes, disputes, or account
notes are available.

Start with: Start with an official regulator or credit-reporting body.

Reviewed July 2026. Agency names and exact steps change over time and by country, so confirm details
with the agency before you rely on them.

## Learn how your local freeze or alert works

A freeze may affect an application that needs access to the relevant credit file. Before placing
one, learn how to lift, remove, or replace it and how the agency verifies your identity. Keep any
confirmation or recovery information it gives you.

Some systems offer a _temporary lift_ for a period or a specific organization. Others remove the
restriction until you place it again. Timing, authentication, and terminology vary by agency.

**Before applying for something new**

- Ask: Ask the organization which credit-reporting body it uses and when it needs access.
- Lift: Lift or remove the restriction at that agency. Follow its current instructions rather than
  assuming a lift is immediate.
- Apply: Apply once the agency confirms access is open.

## Specialty consumer reports in the United States

Specific to the United States.

Some US services use specialty consumer reports in addition to the three nationwide credit files.
The agencies below publish their own access and security options. Check what each report covers
before requesting a restriction.

- **NCTUE, for phone and utility accounts**: Collects information used for some new phone, pay-TV,
and utility accounts. The CFPB says you can request a copy and freeze this report.
- **ChexSystems, for new bank accounts**: Collects information used by some banks and credit unions
when they consider a new checking or savings account. Its current consumer instructions include a
  security-freeze process.
- **Innovis, another consumer-reporting agency**: Maintains a separate consumer report. The CFPB
says you can request a free annual copy and ask Innovis to freeze it.

This is not a complete list. The CFPB maintains a
[directory of US consumer-reporting companies](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/credit-reports-and-scores/consumer-reporting-companies/)
with current report and freeze information. Outside the US, ask an official financial regulator or
consumer-reporting body which specialty records exist where you live.

## Coverage comes from the rules where the file is held.

A freeze or similar restriction is usually aimed at new credit, but its legal effect and exceptions
are local. Existing-account reviews, government access, insurance, employment, tenancy, or other
uses may follow different rules where local law permits them. Do not assume an exemption listed for
one country applies in another. Check the official description for the exact restriction you place.

If a [data breach](https://explained.withpersona.com/your-identity-online/data-breaches) included an
identifier used in new-account applications where you live, check the official guidance for a
freeze, ban, or alert. Restricting a credit file does not replace changing a breached password,
replacing a card, or reviewing an existing account.

**What a freeze is aimed at, and what it is not**

Usually aimed at:

- New credit applications that need access to the credit file

May follow different rules, or needs its own fix:

- Existing-account reviews, government access, insurance, employment, or tenancy, where local law
  permits
- A breached password, a card that needs replacing, or an existing account to review

## Before you close the agency page

1. Use the region guide as a starting point. Confirm the current option, coverage, and identity
requirements with each official agency before placing it.
2. Save each confirmation, login, or recovery detail in your
   [password manager](https://explained.withpersona.com/your-identity-online/password-managers). The
agency's instructions explain what you will need to change the restriction later.
3. If you are responsible for a child, ask the official credit-reporting bodies whether a child file
or protective option exists and what documents they need.
4. If you lose a login or recovery detail, use the agency's official recovery process. Requirements
and timing vary, so do not rely on a message or caller that offers to restore access for a fee.
